A machine that produces medical and dental records could be a game-changer for those struggling to pay their bills.
But the machine isn’t easy to use and has several design flaws that can easily be overlooked, according to a new report from the Federal Trade Commission.
The agency is urging manufacturers to fix the problems before the machines become widespread, saying they could be the difference between life and death.
“While the device may seem simple and straightforward, the machines that we recommend may not always be simple and obvious to those who need to use them,” the FTC said in a statement.
The report is based on a study by the company that makes the machines, WaferPrinting Inc., which is based in Washington state.
The company has been trying to get the FDA to make it easier for people to use the machines and has also introduced a “pay-to-play” feature.
It also has developed a new software update that lets users upload their files and pay a fee to have them printed, rather than pay the paper price.
The FTC found that many people who try to print their documents with the machines have problems, with many failing to get a scan of their paper documents, with some problems showing up even if the machines were working properly.
The problem is particularly acute for people who have complex health care records, said the report.
The machines cost about $20,000 to $30,000, depending on the size of the files they print.
The problems are more common with small files that are difficult to access.
“It’s very common that the documents are not scanned, and then you get the paper errors that are on your file that aren’t visible,” said the FTC’s Karen Littman.
“That is one of the reasons why we think that there’s an urgent need to have these machines out there.”
The agency said it will ask the FDA for guidance on the best way to ensure that people who want to print medical and medical record documents have a machine that’s simple to use.
The paper paper scanner was created to eliminate the need for expensive and labor-intensive paper-based scanners, said Dr. Mark A. Luskin, the director of the FDA’s Office of Electronic Health Records.
“In order to make sure that the paper is printed properly, we need to make the scanners as simple to operate as possible,” he said.
“So you don’t have to worry about them being the right size for your printer, and you don and needn’t worry about printing your medical record in a wrong size, or that the printer isn’t working properly, or any of that.
You just have to print it right.”
The new scanner is called the BioPression™, and it uses the same technology as a medical scanner, but it can’t scan and print a paper document in its own right.
That’s because the paper doesn’t have enough surface area for the scanner to work.
The BioPressions scanner is currently available at health care facilities that provide health care, including hospitals and doctor’s offices.
Lipsman said the agency is not suggesting that people use the BioPrintion to scan and process their own medical records.
But she said the company is making a statement about the need to improve the ease with which the machines can be used.
“We think that’s something that the public can learn from,” she said.
