Indore (Madhya Pradesh): About 470 astronomers, post-doctoral fellows, PhD and postgraduate students from 123 institutions across the country participated in the five-day 41st annual meeting of the Astronomical Society of India (ASI) from March 1 to 5 at the Indian Institute of Technology Indore.
The meeting was inaugurated by Padma Shri AS Kiran Kumar, Member, Space Commission and Ex-Chairman, ISRO in the presence of Prof. Suhas S. Joshi, Director, IIT Indore and Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, Director, ASI and ARIES, attended by 160 scientific scientists. Discussions and about 230 posters were presented at this meeting.
There were fifteen plenary talks addressing various contemporary topics and projects in astronomy and space.

Members presented their research in a wide range of areas of astronomy, with sessions devoted to the Sun and Solar System, the interstellar medium and our own galaxy, other galaxies, cosmology and the origin of the universe, instruments and techniques.
Discussions on upcoming Indian observatories such as Aditya L-1, India’s first solar mission to be launched by ISRO soon; And LIGO-India, a gravitational wave observatory was also done.
Professor Jayant Narlikar was awarded the first ASI Govinda Swarup Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the development of astronomy and astrophysics in India.
Canada’s McGill University Dr. Eve J. Lee is the Professor MK Vainu Bappu Gold Medalist. His work on the study of exoplanets and their formation has defined the way forward for the exoplanet community, inspiring new theoretical and observational initiatives.
Dr. Prateek Sharma, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has been awarded the ASI Lakshminarayan and Nagalakshmi Modali Award for fundamental contributions to the understanding of the circumgalactic medium and multiphase plasma in galaxy clusters.
As last year was the celebration of 50 years of ASI, a special book titled “The Astronomical Endeavors of Sawai Jai Singh” was released during the inauguration of ASI 2023 which depicts the journey behind the Jantar Mantar observatories.
